4th Grade Astronomy Club
by Emily Reed
Lying on a plain of lush grass
blanketed by astrological charts
we anxiously await the appearance
of bright pinpricks through the cloudy lens
of our rusted telescopes.
We munch on moon-pies
and freeze-dried strawberries
while pretending to be astronauts
propelled by an explosion of fiery light
to discover what is and what could be
amongst our fabled stars.
We were held, captivated
by the promise of seeing the
dancing lights, that would be
revealed when a faint wind blew away
the dust resting on ashen sky.
Lying down on our tired backs,
we dreamt of twinkling celestial beacons
guiding us through the vast black lagoon
to leave our footprints on Mars
and to dip our fingers into the
rich chocolate of the Milky Way.
