The Fence
by Katie Lehman
Barbed wire etched into my wrists,
As I try to hold on to the last piece of fence
connecting us,
I should know to let go,
I should know that this barbed barricade is not binding
It is separating us,
It is protecting me from you,
While endangering me to my own mind,
The mind that screams you are still all right,
That your ties to my heart have not been severed
But the tragedy the fence wants to protect me from
Is that there were never ties to sever,
No connection on your end,
And if I let go of the fence,
I will face the truth.
That the ties that created us,
Never existed
