Reading by Candlelight
by Emily Reed
Light caresses the first page,
Worn and withered with age.
It reveals the hidden stains
Across smooth paper plains,
Smells of rosemary and sage.
Velvet curtains frame the stage,
Where a princess is locked in a tower cage,
No one knows how to break her chains,
Yet, light caresses the open page.
She breaks the restraints in a fit of rage,
A bloody battle she will wage,
Against her oppressors, she'll leave no remains,
Because they gave her endless pains.
Will murder lead hate to be assuaged?
...And light caresses the next page.
Worn and withered with age.
It reveals the hidden stains
Across smooth paper plains,
Smells of rosemary and sage.
Velvet curtains frame the stage,
Where a princess is locked in a tower cage,
No one knows how to break her chains,
Yet, light caresses the open page.
She breaks the restraints in a fit of rage,
A bloody battle she will wage,
Against her oppressors, she'll leave no remains,
Because they gave her endless pains.
Will murder lead hate to be assuaged?
...And light caresses the next page.
