It’s All Fun and Games, Until…
by McKenzie Mollica
Connor was like every other average teenager, living life on the wildside, never doing his homework, very athletic, and of course making fun of people. He would sometimes hurt feelings but he always figured it was whatever, forgive and forget, right? Wrong. Connor had a very nice life, and then one day everything took a turn for the worse.
Connor went to school, and had a day just like every other one, until he got home. When he got home, he started getting this headache, and he wasn’t feeling very well. Connor assumed this was just like every other headache he has ever had. He went to the kitchen, grabbed a bag of chips, went to his room, turned on the Xbox, and started playing games while eating chips. A little while later his head was still hurting and he decided he was going
to go to bed.
When he woke up the next morning, he felt a little off. His headache had gone away, but it had now turned into a different feeling that didn’t exactly hurt, but he didn’t know how to describe. He continued on going to get ready for school, and as soon as he went to say goodbye to his mom, it hit him. He realized it. He was able to look within the minds and thoughts of others.
When he first found out he could read the minds of others he was quite shocked. However, the bus was on its way and he didn't want to miss the bus. He decided to just ignore it, and he proceeded to the bus. Of course as soon as he got on, he had to tell all of his friends about what he could do.
“Dude, I can read minds!” Connor exclaimed.
“No you can’t. That’s only in the movies genius,” said Logan, trying to make Connor sound crazy.
“You’re just jealous that you can’t do what I can,” said Connor.
At that point in time, Connor’s friend Logan decided that he had nothing else to say, so for the rest of the bus ride they just sat there quietly. Since Connor was a mind reader now, he was able to hear the thoughts in Logan’s head and let’s just say Logan was in very strong disbelief that Connor could read minds, and maybe a little bit jealous.
They arrived at school, and Connor got off the bus before Logan. They then walked into the cafeteria.
The first thing Connor did when he sat down was started telling all his friends about what he could do. Of course, like Logan, they were all in disbelief. However, Connor decided that he was not going to be putting up with people thinking his skills were fake, so he decided to prove that he could read minds.
“You don’t think I can read your mind?” asked Connor.
“Nope. Not at all, I think this is all just an act,” said Connor’s friend Noah.
“Well then I will just have to prove it,” he began, “right now you are thinking that I am just making this up, and you are thinking about how late you woke up this morning,”Connor stated.
“Wait? How did you know that? That's gotta be a joke!”Noah exclaimed, freaked out.
“See and the whole time you thought I was lying,” replied Connor.
A few minutes later, the students were to go to first period. Connor started his day like always. Every day when he went to first period he always picked on and messed with this one kid, because he’s short, skinny, but a little different from the rest. He had an accent and he was missing part of his finger. Connor never really felt like bothering to learn his name so he referred to the boy as “the boy,” or “this kid”.
Just like normal, Connor started messing with him and picking on him, thinking it was all fun and games and just a joke. It wasn’t until the mind reading came into play that he finally realized something that changed his perspective. He was hurting this kid’s feeling like he wouldn’t believe.
After Connor stopped for a minute, and took a second to see what he was doing to this poor boy by making what he considered jokes, he went to first period and he just sat for a couple minutes, thinking about what he had just learned. He came up with an idea to fix things, and make this kid feel better.
First period finished, and on his way to second, Connor decided it was time for him to talk to the poor kid, and make things right again. Connor continued down the hallway until he found the boy, and then he started the conversation.
“I need to stop you, and I need to talk to you for a minute,” Connor started unsteadily.
“Ok, I guess. Are you here to pick on me some more?” the young boy questioned.
“No, no, I am here to talk and apologize. I want to say I am sorry. I know this might sound weird or crazy, but when I woke up this morning, I realized I was able to read minds. That really helped to open my eyes, and it made me realize that what I was saying to you, I thought was just a joke, but you really took that to heart and I was really hurting your feelings. To help kinda fix things I decided I had to talk to you seriously, and while I know things will never be completely ok, I figured I could try and make things a little better,” Connor said serious but shakily.
“Look,” started the boy, “I know you were just messing around, and while some of the things you said really hurt me, that’s not what made me upset. The part that really made me upset was the fact that it took you this long to notice the way I was feeling, and the fact that you needed to be able to read my mind to figure it out. You were so set on making fun of me and being mean that you couldn’t tell by my body language that I was really hurt by the things you were saying. However, I am very happy that you got the courage to come up to me and apologize. Things will never be perfectly ok, but just hearing your apology really made things better and for that I thank you,”.
“Oh, and one last question,” Connor said.
“Yeah?” replied the boy.
“What is your name?” Connor asked.
“Miles, my name is Miles,” the kid replied.
“Well ok Miles, what do you say I walk you to class?” offered Connor.
Connor and Miles walked to class, and they continued on with their day. During lunch, Connor sat with Miles, and they continued doing this for a few weeks. Then those few weeks turned into a few months, and then eventually they became friends for years. They hung out all the time, and the two boys lived life together forever.
