Load, Save, Delete
by Elizabeth Anderson
It's easy enough to live in a world without rules. Most people consider it a joy, and sit in expensive houses preening themselves, oblivious to what's going on outside. They don't even have to be wealthy, because rich or poor, humans just aren't made to have tough skin or to accept the differences between them peacefully. I've seen it, and even though others may not, it's true. People are blind to what they do not want to see.
And that is why those of us who do let the light shine in, do see what is really going on, made rules. And now, it's easy to keep peace. It's easy to control what people say and do. And it's all thanks to us.
I am a Scientist. My job is to monitor the population and keep people in check. I only have three things in my office, besides my chair. Three things that are my entire job, a simple occupation that is both fulfilling and rich.
Load. Save. Delete.
Plus, of course, the computer screen that sits above the three buttons, but what does that matter compared to that main trio that keeps everyone in check?
All I have to do is watch the monitor, and when I get a notification about a troublemaker, I just load them. Then I save them. And, if they disobey protocol again? I just hit Delete.
And they're gone.
