Observing Fear
by Frances Davis
Fear is such a primal part of our biology. Fear keeps you alive in times of trouble. It forces you to react, whether that reaction is to fight or run from the source of your reaction. Though many of us don’t face the types of fears our ancestors have, fear is still just as present today. It is locked deep within you. Many people see fear as a mental reaction, but it is just as much physical as it is mental. Our blood pumps to our extremities to improve our reflexes and strength. Our eyes dilate to see better. Adrenaline courses through our veins like sparks of pure fire. This reaction is powerful and automatic. We cannot stop it as much as we cannot stop our heart beating.
The results of fear on society are endlessly fascinating subjects. Fear brings forth some of the best and worst in people. Fear is one of the main things that can motivate horrible actions like war or violence. Fear can tear down the toughest of walls, and can strike down the mightiest of nations. Fear can decay the heads of the smart and cripple the arms of the strong. Fear can drive people to do or not do things that can affect the whole world. Fear can tear morality from people's fingertips, causing even the most gentle of mankind to lose all sense of humanity.
Fear is strangely beautiful, though. As much as it destroys humanity, it also builds it. Diamonds do not become so until put under pressure. Without fear, there would be no bravery. Without fear, there would be no hope. The world would be stagnant. Our fears of death have driven humanity to great strides in technology and culture. Without fear of starvation, we would not have agriculture. Without fear of disease we would not have medicine. Fear has driven us to new heights as a species. We have risen from every conflict because fear helps mankind rebuild. Fear forces man to hope and love and grow. Fear is the common enemy we can face together. It can unite us as well as separate us!
Overall, fear is a very interesting and complicated subject. The depths of it are as complicated and diverse as mankind itself.
