Resolute
By Katie Lehman
The year opens up its show curtains
The stage is set for change
But the stage is empty
Barren and quite
There’s no change
It is the same as it always was with the curtains having only given an illusion of something new to come
The year may be different but the contents stay the same
Resolutions promised to ourselves are invisible on stage
A ticket stub in our hands that promises a new show is the same one we had last year
We tell ourselves each year the show will be life changing
That it’ll be something new and beneficial
But a few minutes into nothing new, they leave their seats
Exiting the theater before the first act has even truly begun
Few are there when someone walks out onto the stage
Even fewer when the figure finally speaks
“You kept going,”
“You wanted change and did more than just say it,”
“You made it,”
“You were resolute in your desire to better yourself,”
By the time they’ve finished and have walked off stage it is December
The curtains close, the ticket booth opens back up,
And a new sale begins for the January show
