Running
by Emily Reed
Alysha was always running from her problems, metaphorically. Now, she was running away from the problem of an erupting volcano, literally.
Mount Ixs gushed out lava like a freshly popped pimple. Flaming pus slid down the main street and spread to the back alleys. It engulfed the local bakery, bank, and hospital and reduced them all to sooty piles of carbon ash.
Yet Alysha kept running through the mess of crippled buildings and scorched nature because there was nothing else she could do.
The smoke from the busy volcano filled the drowsy grey sky. She figured that the smoke clouded their vision and blocked the line of sight of those above. There could be no other explanation as to why they were letting this decimation occur. If they could see what was happening, they'd try to stop it.
In one desperate attempt to help, Alysha cried out to Hephaestus, Greek god of fire, and said, "Hephaestus, what did I ever do to you? I apologize for what I and others have done that caused you grief. So please, I beg of you, stop destroying our town."
She was felt powerless when he didn't respond. All she could do was run from her problems because every attempt at bravery was foiled by her own, or a Greek god's, reluctance.
She realized that nobody was going to help her so she had to help herself. She decided that she wouldn't stop running until it stopped her.
