海の水 (Umi no mizu) (Sea Water)
By Katie Lehman
Under water, suffocating, frantic
Hands reaching out to pull me to the surface
I try to grab them desperately
They phase right through me
Invisible to those reaching out above the waves,
The surface lingers out of reach,
Moving towards it is all that’s left to try, but nothing happens
I remain trapped in place
Staring helpless at the hands above they start to change
They are not reaching for me
They’re pointing
Pointing down, deeper, farther into the ink below
I can’t swim up, but I will swim down
To reach the surface I will go deeper
Facing the darkness of the ocean
Waking up to face its light
