This is my poem, Are you really alone
by Fran Davis
Fear.
You wake in the middle of darkness
Your heart a-beating like a drum
Ba-boom, ba-boom
The sound in the night.
You hear a movement.
One little sliver of doubt
In the safety of your room.
Are you really alone?
Your heart beats faster.
Ba-boom, ba-boom
The sound in the night.
You cower in the blackness
Using your blanket as a shield.
A fruitless attempt.
You hear the noise again.
Just a slither in the night.
Drums. Beats. Steps.
Getting closer and closer to your bed.
Are you ever alone?
Your heart races faster and faster.
Ba-boom, ba-boom
The steps come closer and closer.
You feel the cold hand of dread
Squeezing your heart.
You open your mouth to scream
But it is stuck in your throat.
So you wince in the darkness
Quietly awaiting your fate
And still your heart races.
Ba-boom, ba-boom
Nothing happens.
A sweet and terrifying nothing.
You feel your muscles relaxing again.
You smile softly to yourself and settle down into your bed.
You are safe.
One last check around the room.
You turn on your bedside light and scream
A death-defying, ear-piercing scream.
Inches from your face are two bright green eyes
Staring at you like green lanterns.
Your heart is ready to burst from your chest.
BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM!
Then you sigh, then you laugh.
Like the terror is being evaporated in the sun of realization.
The eyes belong to your cat.
She wants to be let outside.
You laugh at your stupidity.
You are safe for tonight.
Safe from the terrifying fear of fear itself.
Are you really alone?
You wake in the middle of darkness
Your heart a-beating like a drum
Ba-boom, ba-boom
The sound in the night.
You hear a movement.
One little sliver of doubt
In the safety of your room.
Are you really alone?
Your heart beats faster.
Ba-boom, ba-boom
