To Remember in 2019
By Beau Cameron
Some days you will cry in your car.
Everything will be too much
and something will happen
-A meaningless argument
An offhand comment-
and you will crumble under its weight
And then you will cry in your car
engine off
in below freezing
Your hair will catch
on the wetness of your jaw
You will shake
without shaking
and the snow that starts
spurring another round of sobs
will remind you of another bad day
Your breath will stutter
en route to your lungs
Bite down on your hand
so it’s not so loud
Cover your face
from someone not there
Hands drop
given up
and you curse
the pitiful noises
How pitiful:
Crying in your stupid car.
But your cheeks will dry
An uncomfortable stickiness
from the lines
in your foundation
The cold will creep
up through your fingertips
down to your ribs
and the shaking is shivering
and it’s actually there
In your glovebox there are napkins
scratchy, brown
But enough
that you won’t have to explain
your face at home
It’s okay to cry in your car
But you should really
turn on the heat
