Who am I?
by Payton Hull
Who am I?
Skin draped over a colossal mess of bone and muscle?
Am I just a random formation of features
Passed on through millions of years of evolution
Who somehow gained unbelievable characteristics
That can not be copied by any other?
Who am I?
Daughter of two and friend to many?
Planned 9 months before my existence
Just as many have before my parents?
An extension of my blood line and
Nothing more?
Who am I?
Someone just trying to get through everyday
As though it’s the hardest thing I could be asked to do?
Burdened with clinical depression and anxiety
Barely getting any sleep
And cutting myself just to feel something?
Who am I?
A student trying to find purpose in education?
Someone trying to pour my energy
Into things that leave me
With temporary satisfaction
Never filling me up with what I really need?
Who am I?
A figment of someone's imagination?
Just an imaginary friend from a crazy psycho
Who just needed someone who was their own?
Simply a character in the mind of another
With no real control over what happens?
Who am I?
A condominium of cells
That only know what to do
Due to an omnipotent muscle named by itself?
One that only knows what to do
Because biology told it to?
Who am I?
A jokester who makes my friends laugh
When they’re sad or happy,
Lonely or sociable,
Courageous or afraid?
Someone who’s there for my friends but not there for myself?
Who am I?
A result of 7 different medications just to feel sane?
Someone who’s drugged for the sole purpose of being accepted
Yet constantly falling short of societies expectations
And even falling short of my own?
Who am I?
Someone who’s been letting the world tell me who I am
Instead of experiencing life
And figuring out for myself;
Instead, hiding away
Scared of the hope in my head?
Who am I?
A hopeless mess trying to figure out
The way of the world?
A lost sheep that never had a sheppard?
A tiny moving part
In a machine that never functioned properly?
Who am I?
I am who I am.
Someone who doesn’t have to be afraid.
Someone learning their way through a life
Filled with miles of mountains to climb.
I'm doing all I can to make it in this world.
