Plants Need to Eat
by Erik Schwetje
The cloud grow heavy, swirl about
The sun hides, runs away
As raindrops bullet-like come down
No going out today
No sports to play, no walks sublime
We're left to pace in cells
But though we miss the sunny times
Plants need to eat as well
The grass lives off the same cascades
That we so strong abhor
And trees only have flowers made
Once skies begin to pour
It may get drear once sunlight quits
But as you mope about
Know that though you may pray for it
Some may not like the drought
The sun hides, runs away
As raindrops bullet-like come down
No going out today
No sports to play, no walks sublime
We're left to pace in cells
But though we miss the sunny times
Plants need to eat as well
The grass lives off the same cascades
That we so strong abhor
And trees only have flowers made
Once skies begin to pour
It may get drear once sunlight quits
But as you mope about
Know that though you may pray for it
Some may not like the drought
Erik Schwetje is a 12-grader at Linganore High School. "Plants Need to Eat" is based on the idea that everyone has different needs which we may not initially see or understand from our point of view. This is the first poem that he has shared publicly, so he hopes that you enjoy what he has written!
